I was very impressed late last fall when Zack Palen spearheaded a big softball tournament at the new complex on West Lea Street, sponsored by the Loving Baptist Church.
That night the Carlsbad Radio staff were running around like mad trying to get everything set up for our remote broadcast of the opening ceremonies. We were frozen right down to our toes and looking for shelter from the wind at every opportunity. The crowds of players, parents, coaches and supporters were energized, excited and cold like only people dressed in summer-weight baseball uniforms in a fall cold snap can be. If you had coats or blankets for sale, you could have made a killing that night.
I know that lots of people worked very hard to make that first tournament the success it was. However, one person that night was putting out enough energy to heat the whole outdoor complex, if we could only have captured it. Zack.
Zack was answering maybe 20 to 30 phone calls a minute. Simultaneously he was giving directions to out of town teams, making suggestions to parents, directing tournament staff, smiling at younger brothers and sisters, solving problems for vendors and maybe even rooting for his favorite teams. Zack was rocket-fueled and super-sonic.
I’m thinking he must have slept for a week afterwards.
Last week, the crazy man did it again. No letup. July 25th he’s doing it again. He’s insane.
I’m okay with that. Come out and see for yourself.
